This is the Joby S4 Aircraft
This video is from our recent demo flight in Japan. Below shows a full flight including vertical takeoff and full wing borne flight.
Both videos demonstrate our standard pilotless remotely-flown configuration.
My teams' testing identified and addressed bugs in the flight code of both of these aircraft, 'de-risking' these flights.
Here's a CAD view of our HWIL lab
This is the 'Ironbird' or hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) lab. This lab is a full shipset of flight sensors and control effectors for the Joby S4 aircraft with active load systems and fault injection equipment. This lab allows my team to explore aircraft-level dynamic responses, especially in the context of the S4 control systems. In addition, we use the lab to flush out system level responses to faults such as HV and LV faults, sensor faults, and EMI.
An example 'Ironbird'
This 'ironbird' is not our own, it's likely a Boeing or Airbus build. However, this ironbird serves the same purpose as our HWIL lab: FMET and requirements testing, as well as support for development of new systems. Here aircraft maneuvers can be tested before performing them on an aircraft in flight.


Propulsion in-the-loop
Our HWIL lab is one of the few labs to date with integrated propulsion systems, this allows us to work with the the full system, end-to-end in the loop.
The blue motor in this photo is the dyno designed to induce a propeller representative opposing load against our Joby Electric Propulsion units (EPUs).
On the left is a "crown" or mounting point for one of our EPUs.
Note: our EPU is unfortunately not in this shot.

The control room of our HWIL.
This is the control room of our HWIL. This is where myself and my team fly the aircraft, inject faults, and record results. This is the 'bread and butter' of IFPCS verification, where I've been working since August '23.
